About the object
The crescent moon alludes to the celestial appearance of the "apocalyptic woman" in the Revelation of John. It is a symbol of Mary's "Immaculate Conception", i.e. her purity and freedom from sin. The figure allegedly comes from Tauberbischofsheim and was probably the central figure in a winged altar shrine.
