The figure probably comes from the Freiburg Reuerinnen Convent. Its patron saint was the sinner and later disciple, Magdalena. The vessel containing ointment refers to the embalming of the body of Jesus. The sculpture may have been part of a holy grave, but it can also be conceived of as a free-standing figure.
