Lamentation over the Dead Christ, um 1760
About the object
In this colourful polygonal sculpture of the Lamentation of Christ, Jesus, having been taken down from the cross, is lying in Mary's lap. Three putti have joined the young Mary in her mourning and form a devotional group around the body of Christ. Although the stigmata of the Passion - and thus Christ suffering - are visible, the interpretation of the motif is restrained and almost tenderly executed in comparison with rococo stylistics.
