About the object
The figure comes from Altsimonswald near Waldkirch where it stood in an altar shrine. A Strasbourg workshop would most probably have been commissioned to build the altarpiece. The coat of coloured paint now visible was probably applied when it was refurbished in the Baroque period during the late-17th century.
