About the object
This monastery door came to the Völkerkundliche Sammlung (Freiburg Ethnological Collection) via Max Henry Ferrars in March 1898 and could therefore have been exhibited in the museum at its inauguration in June 1899. Ferrars had worked for 25 years in the Imperial East India Forestry Service in what is now Myanmar. He had built up a collection there and later donated it over to the museum in his adopted home of Freiburg. This door from the monastery of Oppo near Hinthada was part of this collection. He probably acquired it when it was replaced by a new door and thus surplus to requirements.
