Bag

About the object

A mall, carefully decorated bag for a man. It was used for the storage of tobacco or betel nuts and also functioned as a status symbol due to the rich ornamentation. This piece is very well preserved and shows no signs of use. The object was acquired in 1907 from the Frankfurt Ethnological Museum. It comes from the Friedrich Wandres collection. Wandres was a plantation manager at the German New Guinea Company. The Frankfurt Ethnological Museum acquired the majority of his collection, however, parts of the collection (»doublets«) were sold by the museum to the Freiburg museum.
