The gentleman wearing a blue-grey frock coat and with a luxuriant lace jabot (shirt ruff) turns to the right to reveal his profile. His powdered, plaited wig is fastened with a black bow. The portrait forms a pair with the profile portrait of a lady. The portrait's background, which once corresponded to its counterpart tonally, has subsequently been overpainted in black.
