Katsushika Hokusai
The Ghost of Oiwa from the series »One Hundred Ghost Stories«, 1831
About the object
The story of the Oiwa's ghost originates from Kabuki theatre. She is invariably portrayed with dishevelled hair and disfigured face - having been poisoned by her unfaithful husband. Hokusai further developed the tradition by fusing Oiwa's face with a defunct temple lantern.
