Utagawa Hiroshige
Evening Shower at the Great Bridge of Atake from the series »One Hundred Famous Places in Edo«, 1857
About the object
The print shows a bird's-eye view of Shin-Ohashi Bridge, which was a landmark in the capital Edo, today's Tokyo. Before this print arrived in Europe, the depiction of rain as diagonal lines in the picture was unknown to Europeans. So-called »Hiroshige Rain« was then adapted by numerous Western artists. Vincent Van Gogh was also inspired by Hiroshige's print for his painting Brug in de regen- naar Hiroshige (Bridge in the Rain. After Hiroshige).
