Utagawa Hiroshige
Fish Print: Bonito and Cherries from the series »A Shoal of Fishes«, 1832–1834
About the object
According to the Japanese, the Bonito fish tastes best in May when the cherry trees sprout their leaves. Hiroshige also included the theme in his series of fish studies. European collectors valued it highly and also the Freiburg ethnologist and former director of the Municipal Art Collection, Ernst Grosse sought prints with fish or bird motifs.
