Utagawa Hiroshige

Kameyama, clear weather after snow, 1831–1834

About the object

On a snowy winter morning, a procession of travellers on the Tokaido main road passes Kameyama Castle. For the representation of the snow, the artist skilfully used the negative space between the printing plate and the untouched white of the mulberry paper.
