Utagawa Hiroshige
Kutsukake: A View of Rain on the Hiratsuka Plains from the series »Sixty-Nine Stages of the Kisokaidō Road«, 1835/36
About the object
A trader travels along Kiso Street in the rain with his pack oxen. This was one of five main arteries that connected the capital Edo with the rest of Japan. Similar to Hiroshige's Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake (V / 2095), the way in which the rain is depicted is fascinating. In this case, it consists of large grey stripes.
