Utagawa Hiroshige
Peonies and Peacock, 1830er Jahre
About the object
The peony and peacock arrived in Japan from China. This is why the poem was written in Chinese orthography and script in this print. It reads: »The flowers of the peony are like a spring full of riches and honour«. The opulence of the depicted peonies carries the associations of wealth and honour. The magnificent plumage of the peacock appositely complements the peonies.
