Utagawa Toyokuni I.

In the home of an upper-class family, the household gathers to be entertained by a young showman and his monkey. These animals were not invited just for fun. It was believed that monkeys were endowed with special powers to protect horses. They were therefore also taken to the stables for purification rituals.
