About the object
The board-like, flat wooden object represents a highly simplified human figure. The head is pear-shaped. The arms and legs with offset feet and notched toes are depicted in attenuated form. The entire surface is covered with incised dotted circles. There is a suggestion of a diagonal cross above the chest. This wooden doll was discovered in a grave in Karara in Middle Egypt dating from the period of late Antiquity. It is unclear whether this funerary object is a toy for a deceased child or a symbol of fertility.
