About the object

This relief represents a highly dynamic and emotional staging of Christ's crucifixion. The attitude of the characters conveys their abject sorrow and desperation. John the Apostle, on the left-hand edge of the relief, is slightly offset and sculpted in-the-round. This figure effectively guides us into the depiction and invites to take a closer look at the events as they unfold. The relief was originally painted in colour and was probably framed in a glass case (Känsterle).
