According to legend, the prospect of Mary's impending death summoned the twelve apostles from all parts of the world through the heavens to gather around her deathbed. Here, John hands her the funerary candle. The relief was part of the inside of an altarpiece wing. It is based on a copper engraving by Martin Schongauer.
