About the object

This carpet was made in Afghanistan by the weaver Safer Ali during the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989). The pictorial representation of war scenes in traditional carpet weaving was a way for people to come to terms with the trauma of this conflict. In 1991, the museum bought ten Afghan war rugs from Masoud Farhatyar. They were displayed in 1994 as part of the exhibition "Afghanistan - War and Everyday Life".
