Meister Johannes
Cross combined with a disk (flabellum cross), 1260/70
About the object
The best-known examples of flabella are from the Romanesque and Gothic period. This example, which is essentially High Gothic, but has undergone several modifications over time, has resided in the Freiburg Minster since 1483. It can be used both as a standing crucifix and as a processional cross. Indeed, it is still carried on a staff during the Corpus Christi procession to this day.
