About the object
This panel was the back section of the shrine belonging to the former high altar in the Church of St Jacob in Pfullendorf. The middle section - depicting Christ pronouncing eternal judgement and the angels blowing trumpets to raise the dead - is missing. It was customary in former times to take confession behind the choir altar, with the effect that the Last Judgment was dramatically brought home to the penitent parishioner.
