About the object

The shields of the Sulka people with their strikingly expressive designs were used as a form of armour in combat, but were also deployed in celebratory dances. The paintings depict a particular mythical creature known by name to the bearer and owner of the shield, which, alongside the physical protection it afforded its bearer, also protected the warrior from harm.
