About the object

Among the principal pre-colonial nutritional staples found on the Marshall Islands was the fruit of the pandanus tree (Pandanus tectorius). It was consumed raw, cooked and fermented in dishes. Racks like this one were used in order to dry the fruit for further use, for example in making preserves (II/1294).
