About the object
Pestles of this kind were used to break down food or to make raw materials supple. As such, it was one of the most important household tools. It was also a significant possession for women, who presided over such activities. This tool was handed down to a daughter by her mother and thus had qualities related to gender. It can be regarded, therefore, as an extremely valuable object, which would not have ordinarily been given away. The artefact lacks signs of use, which shows that it was made for the collection rather than for actual use.
