Malterer tapestry (Women’s Deceits Tapestry), 1320/30
About the object
This bench drape or hanging comes from the St Catherine Dominican convent in Freiburg. It bears the coat of arms of the convent's founders, Johannes and Anna Malterer. Four double scenes show how exemplary strong or famous men, ranging from biblical antiquity to the age of chivalry, suffer because of their love for a woman. The series of vignettes draws upon the topic of "Weiberlisten" (woman’s deceits). From left to right: Samson, Aristotle, Vergil, Iwein.
