Modern democracy developed during the 17th and 18th centuries: oppressed people demanded that the powers of monarchs were limited, a separation of powers and the supremacy of the people. Courageously, they implemented their demands through civil and religious wars in England, the Declaration of Independence in North America and the French Revolution.
