About the object

The boats building stands out as one of the most remarkable material cultural skills found on the Marshall Islands. Here, eminently seaworthy boats were built without the use of metal or nails. Ironwood chisels, such as this one, and the mallets that go with them, were used for caulking the walls and seams of boats.
