Trumpet

1911 - 1913

About the object

The pipe in this trumpet has been made from the wood of the cecropia tree. The decorative plate with an anthropomorphic form has been made from a thin board and has been painted black and blue. This is decorated with cotton bobbles, feathers, tassels and glass beads. During the Paschierá dance, the dancers raise and lower the trumpets in rhythmical synchronisation with the dancing. These trumpets produce loud, muffled tones. Theodor Koch-Grünberg documented the use of such trumpets during a festive celebration in the film "From the Life of the Taulipang in Guayana" in 1911.
