About the object

The amulet made of blue faïence depicts Horus's eye. It is shaped like the human eye with an eyebrow and extended eyelid line, but it also incorporates elements of a stylised falcon's eye with a spiral arc and its descending extension. According to a myth, Horus's eye was gouged out in combat with Seth, but subsequently restored by Thoth. That is why it is also known an Udjat eye, as 'udjat' means intact or healed. The eye of Horus was associated with the moon, so the recurring injury and healing of the eye related to the phases (waxing and waning) of the moon. The Udjat eye was a symbol of regeneration and was worn as protection against the so-called evil eye. As a result, amulets of this kind are very common and were also found in large numbers in graves.
