Ziborium <Vessel>
Reliquary ciborium, um 1420
About the object
Exotic natural products also enjoyed great popularity in ecclesiastical treasuries. Coconuts imported from Asia and Africa were processed into vessels or reliquaries as early as the Middle Ages. The relic capsule on the lid displays a miniature painting of St Mary Magdalene. This ciborium was possibly intended for one of the monasteries of the Dominican order consecrated in the name of St Mary Magdalene.
