Little is known about the artist of this portrait. J. Spelter worked as a miniature painter in Karlsruhe in the first half of the nineteenth century. It was there that he painted this portrait of Catharina Barbara (Babette) von Klock (1805-1850), née Clauß, in 1838. It was painted in tandem with the portrait of her husband.
