The artist who painted this expressive portrait of a man, namely William Berczy (1744-1813), was a most colourful personality. He founded the Canadian town of Markham and was a co-founder of York (now a district of Toronto). In addition to painting portraits, he pursued other interests. He painted this portrait of a man of letters whilst in London.
