Calabash
1870 - 1899
About the object
The profiles of two ships have been carved around this portly calabash and decorated with pokerwork (pyrography). Both carvings represent large sailing ships with several masts and anchors. Flags can be seen next to cranes, which depict the loading or unloading of the transported goods. One of the two flags may be the British “Union Jack”. This flask was probably made for sale to the crews who landed off the coast of Cameroon in the context of colonial trade.
