Three-quarter Length Portrait of a Man Wearing a Beret, 1790 - 1899
About the object
The man with a prominent hooked nose and beard is depicted in sixteenth-century apparel. It could be a portrait of Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) festooning this box. Lacquered papier-mâché snuff boxes with portraits were popular around 1800, especially among the middle classes.
