About the object
This putto is one of two rococo putti at prayer that originally flanked the tabernacle of the high altarpiece of the Church of the Teutonic Order in Merdingen at the Tuniberg. The consecrated hosts - representing the body of Christ according to Catholic doctrine - are kept in the tabernacle. The boys (from the Italian "putto" meaning boy) are turned toward him in veneration.
