About the object
This misty, poetic image is from the Ashinoko Lake by Hakone. It is possible to make out two villas next to the lake shore: many Westerners built villas in this area. On the hilltop, there is a large spa hotel, built in a western style. Today, the area remains a popular place to visit, where numerous hotels and Japanese-style inns (ryokan) operate.
