Fishing by the Seashore, 1860 - 1880

About the object

A fisherman standing by the seashore is captured wearing typical rain apparel – a hat and a straw cape, called a mino. Next to him, there is a woven bamboo basket, as an example of the myriad types of baskets for all conceivable purposes that were made from this versatile material. Photographs of fishermen (as well as farmers and other labourers) became a popular topic for western visitors, reflecting their curiosity to know how ordinary Japanese people lived on a daily basis.
