Italian girl, 1840

About the object

The backs of paintings can also provide clues about the circumstances relating to the making of a work. A stamp on the reverse of this painting proves that the canvas was acquired in Paris from a trade outlet dealing with artists’ materials. Hermann had travelled to Paris in 1840 to work in his brother's workshop, which would explain why the portrait is dated 1840/41.
