John is considered to be the last prophet of the Old Covenant and forerunner of Christ. He oppugned Herod Antipas in his public sermons. As a result of these activities, he was imprisoned and executed at the instigation of his stepdaughter, Salome. The wing of the altarpiece depicts his beheading during the Feast of Herod.
