Rudolf Großmann

Potsdamer Platz, um 1910-1912

About the object

There are two very different views of Potsdamer Platz in Berlin in the museum collection: the given pictorial space develops different qualities depending on the medium – be it a drawing or a print, the chosen perspective, the compositional means, the handling of foregrounds and backgrounds, as well as the crispness (or lack) of focus – and provides thus a completely different impression of space. In the case of the drawing, the central placement of the tree creates an alternating spatial impression, which, on the one hand, oscillates between flatness and depth, and on the other, unites two essentially contradictory viewing angles.
