Rudolf Großmann

Potsdamer Platz, um 1912-1914

About the object

There are two quite different views of Berlin's Potsdamer Platz in the museum's collection: the given pictorial space develops different qualities depending on the medium – be it a drawing or a print, the chosen perspective, the compositional means, the handling of foregrounds and backgrounds, as well as the crispness (or lack) of focus – and provides thus a completely different impression of space. Here in the etching, the street aligns in classic central perspective into the depth of the composition. A slightly elevated view of the scene reinforces this impression and brings the bustle of this busy Berlin hub to life.
