Hendrick Goltzius
Marcus Curtius on horseback, 1586
About the object
A deep crevice had opened up in the Forum Romanum, which would only close again after Rome had made a great sacrifice. Marcus Curtius understood this as a call to prove his bravery and courage. Clad in full armour and on horseback, he plunged into the smoking crevice. The background duplicates the legendary scene in miniature.
