Chalice

The inscription at the top says that the chalice was used to dispense the so-called "Johannesminne". It was already the custom in the Middle Ages to offer believers consecrated wine on the Day of St John (27 December) to ward off danger and evil spirits. The medallions probably come from the goldsmith's workshop in Freiburg, which is associated with a master by the name of Johannes.
