Portrait of Michael Welte, 1878
About the object
The portrait, painted from a photograph, shows the founder of the company M. Welte & Sons, which manufactured self-playing, mechanical musical instruments. Founded in 1832 in Vöhrenbach (Black Forest), the company moved to Freiburg in 1872. The organ in the Augustiner Museum was built by M. Welte & Sons in 1935 behind the baroque organ prospect.
