Ernst Hänßler
Portrait of an Italian Woman, 1878
About the object
She is looking directly out of the painting, yet we cannot meet her gaze. The portrait of this unknown Italian woman was painted during Hänßler's student days in Karlruhe, which the artist himself noted below his signature on the canvas. The museum acquired the painting in 1915 from Emilie Hänßler, the painter's widow.
