Stoskopf used bright colours for this portrait of an Alsatian farmer in his parlour. The luminosity of the colours is juxtaposed with the sober expression of the peasant and the matter-of-fact composition of the portrayal. Stoskopf painted numerous portraits of local peasants that illustrate everyday life.
