The oval portrait depicts the Protestant pastor and provost, Ernst Daniel Bursy, who came from Kuldīgā (Goldingen, Latvia). Through the open book in the background, Bursy is able to communicate his words directly from the painting: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35).
