Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto, 1860 - 1880
About the object
The Kiyomizu Temple is a large Buddhist temple founded in the eighth century. It is famous for its platform, affording a panoramic view of Kyoto. Kiyomizu, meaning “pure water”, is well known for its waterfall, which was believed to have powers to grant wishes. The Japanese colourists created convincing chromatic images from black-and-white photographs, but in this case the foliage of the trees seems to have been finished in a hurry.
