Snow scene with the Futago (“Twin”) Islands from a series on Matsushima Bay. Matsushima (literally “Pine Islands”) features over 250 small islands, mostly covered by pine trees. For centuries it has been celebrated as one of Japan's three most scenic views alongside Miyajima Island and the Amanohashidate sandspit. Many famous poets, such as Matsuo Bashō (1644-1694), have written poems celebrating its beauty.
