The format of the portrait reveals that this portrait was originally painted for another frame. The sheet does not completely fill the section of the frame. While the painting has survived remarkably well over the years, the frame has literally been gnawed away by the ravages of time. The portrait forms a pair with that of a lady wearing a pleated bonnet.
