The Martyrdom of St Sebastian, 1500/10

About the object

The officer of the imperial bodyguard was a Christian and, according to legend, was sentenced to death by arrows in 288. He survived, but later died another martyr's death. Alongside St Roch Sebastian was the ultimate patron saint of plague sufferers. The relief is probably from the inside of a wing from an altarpiece.
